I can see that there are 2 Mythubuntu's we can boot into as well, but then we can't get to some of our files in the Ubuntu 8.04 we have (the one we have installed our video card drivers in and updated, and now cannot see).īTW: I did a dmesg | grep cx18.

We had some problems earlier on but it was working.

#HAUPPAUGE WINTV HVR 1600 INSTALL#

It could be a bad install of Ubuntu, reading your post. I've seen there are problems with Nvidia cards and the HVR1600 but that shouldn't be our case as we don't have NVidia.įrustrated at this point and practically helpless in the world of Linux. Is there a better distro (we have 8.04)? But could we keep our e-mail and our calender items? Data, in other words? If we reinstall Ubuntu, I'm afraid we'll be back at square one with all the stuff we fixed before and now can't remember how we did. Got a blank screen but thought maybe I could use SSH (with Windows? How? I don't know that either), but now I can't VNC so that's out too. I was able to VNC to the computer before we rebooted. I can see the GRUB menu and edit a line if need be. We have only one hard drive in there, if that helps. And honestly, I can't say where my root directory is. I don't have a bootable floppy or CD of linux at the moment. It is a Dell computer.Īnd sorry, I really couldn't understand the rest. If I move the mouse, I see a disorted white banner at the top, repeating the word Dell. We rebooted and still can't see anything really. "which gdm"-/sbin/gdm, or /usr/sbin/gdm.ĭisabling the auto-GUI login "gdm" should leave you If the latter, can't help but if no GUI suggest usingĪ bootable floppy/CD ("tomsrtbt," "system rescue") toīoot, then if yr root directory "/" is on hda2, lots ofĭifferent text on the screen, in the first place? > when it booted back up, we can't see a darn thingĭo you mean, no GUI in the end, or do you mean no I will need detailed command line help though, I'm a PC girl trying to work with Linux here. If we can do something to login with a command line instead of the GUI, that might be the best way. The mouse pointer looks like an odd square. When it booted back up, we can't see a darn thing.

I typed it in, but nothing came back, so I went on to the next session and didn't skip it. If the output matches, this section can probably be skipped.

We don't have Mythtv up and working yet, so I skipped that part.) (Starting with downloading the latest driver. (Gotta admit, Windows makes that so much easier.)

#HAUPPAUGE WINTV HVR 1600 DRIVER#

Took awhile to figure out the whole driver install. So, anyway, we bought a Hauppauge HVR-1600 tv tuner card. Mostly just watched TV and checked e-mails. Well, it's been awhile since I really tried to *work* in Linux.
